Biography, Life story

The beginning of Mariah Carey’s life, 1970-1987

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York, United States. Of American parents, her father, Alfred Roy, is of African and Venezuelan descent, while her mother and Patricia’s father (Hickey née) are of Irish descent. Patricia’s father died while she was young, yet she inherited his love of music. Developing a career as an occasional opera singer and voice coach, she met Alfred in 1960. As he began earning a living as an aeronautical engineer, he married Patricia later that year, and moved to a small suburb of New York. After marriage, Patricia’s family disowned her for marrying an African-American man. As she later grew up, Mariah said she felt neglected by her mother’s family, a sign that affected her greatly: “Later on I was like, ‘Okay, where’ Will this leave me? am I a bad person?’ You know, the common denominator of being a multiracial person is still there, but I’m happy with who I am.” During the period of years between Maria’s older sister Alison and Maria’s birth, the Carey family witnessed personal conflicts within the community due to their ethnicity. Maria’s name is derived from the song “They Call the Wind Maria,” originally from the 1951 Broadway musical “Paint Your Wagon.” When Maria was three years old, her parents divorced due to the increasingly difficult nature of their marriage.

Maria talks here about how her childhood was difficult

“It was hard for me, moving around a lot, I grew up on my own… My parents got divorced. I’ve always felt different from everyone else in the neighborhood, and I’m a racially different person. And sometimes, that can be a problem. If you look a certain way, everyone will say ‘white girl’, I will go ‘no, that’s not who I am’.”

After their separation, Maria’s older sister Alison moved in with her father, while the other two children stayed with Patricia. As the years went by, Maria grew estranged from her father, and she later stopped seeing him. At the age of four, Mariah recalled that she would sneak out and take the radio under the bed covers at night, and sing from her heart, trying to find peace in music. In elementary school, she excels in subjects that she enjoys, such as art, literature, and music, while finding no interest in others. After several years of financial struggle, Patricia made enough money to move her family to a more stable and affluent section of New York. Maria began writing poems and adding melodies to them, thus beginning to be described as a singer-songwriter while attending Harpofields High School in Greenlane, New York. Even at a young age, Mariah excelled in her music, and was able to perfect the vocal ability to whistle while singing, though only beginning to master the property through training with her mother. Despite her daughter’s foray into the world of classical opera, Patricia never felt pressured into pursuing a career in this genre, nor was she interested in the world of music. Maria indicated that she kept her work as a singer-songwriter a secret, and noted that Patricia “wasn’t presumptuous, she never said, ‘I should sing opera’ I respect opera, but it didn’t affect me”.

At the end of high school she became involved with Christopher Gavin, with whom she shared musical aspirations. The duo wrote a song together, however, they needed an assistant who could play an electric keyboard, “We invited someone to come but he couldn’t come, so by chance we agreed on Ben.” [مارغوليز]Ben came into the studio, he didn’t know how to play an electric keyboard very well – he was good at drums – but after that day, we stayed in touch, and we started writing songs.” The two began composing and composing songs in the basement of his father’s store during Mariah’s senior year of high school. After composing their first song together, “Here We Go Round Again”, which Mariah described as having a Motown feel to it, they went on to write a full sample tape. After Maria graduated from high school, her mother remarried, eventually moving her out of her mother, Patricia’s apartment, and into the one-bedroom studio in Manhattan, which she shared with four other students. During this period, Maria worked several jobs as a waitress, usually getting fired after two weeks between shifts. While she needs to work in order to pay the rent, Mariah’s mind and effort remain with her musical ambitions, as she continues to work late into the night with Margulies, hoping to finish a sample tape that can be passed on to label executives. After completing four songs from the sample tape, Mariah attempted to transfer to record labels, but failed to gain traction. It was at this time that I met the popular pop singer Brenda Key.
