Golshifteh Farahani was born on June 10, 1983 in Tehran, the capital of Iran. She is the daughter of Iranian director and actor Behzad Farahani, and her sister, actress Shaqaiq Farahani. She started studying music and playing the piano at the age of five. And at the age of 12 she entered the music school in Tehran. She started acting at the age of 14, and since then she has acted in nearly 18 films, winning several awards in Iran and France. She now lives in Paris, France, with her husband, Amin Mahdavi.
Banned from leaving Iran
Her participation in the 2008 film Mass of Lies, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, whose story revolves around an American intelligence agent who heads to Jordan to arrest a fleeing terrorist, made the Iranian authorities prevent her from leaving Iran, as the official Iranian news agency (IRNA) stated, “He Iranian cinema stars must obtain permission from the Ministry of Culture before appearing in foreign films.” Sources believe that the reason for the decision to prevent Golshifteh from traveling is that she did not wear the veil imposed by the Iranian authorities on her compatriots, while she was acting in the movie.
Nudity and ban from entering Iran
Nude photos of her were published on the cover of Madame Figaro magazine, which is affiliated with the French newspaper Le Figaro. As a result, Golshifteh Farahani was prevented from entering Iranian territory after she received a call from the Iranian government stating that she was no longer welcome in Iran again, and that she should not consider returning to Iran. The actress justified her action as “a protest against the restrictive Islamic traditions of the Iranian film industry in light of the conservative cultural policies under the leadership of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”
