ولد بن ستيلر (Ben Stiller) في يوم 30 نوفمبر 1965 في مدينة نيويورك بولاية نيويورك في الولايات المتحدة. والده هو الممثل الكوميدي جيري ستيلر وهو يهودي، ووالدته هي الممثلة الكوميدية آن ميرا وهي مسيحية كاثلوكية. درس في (UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television)، وفي (جامعة كاليفورنيا، لوس أنجلوس). وبعد تركه الجامعة أمضى عدة سنوات في المسرح منذ عام 1975. ثم بدأ التمثيل في هوليوود، فقام بالتمثيل في (The House of Blue Leaves). ظهر لأول مرة في السينما من خلال فيلم (ستيفن سبيلبيرغ إمبراطورية الشمس) في عام 1987. ثم قام بمحاولة إخراج لفائدة شبكة (إم تي في)، وأعجبت الشبكة بأدائه وأعطته برنامجا خاصا باسم (عرض بن ستيلر) عام 1992، وهو البرنامج الذي أدير بعد ذلك بواسطة فوكس. لكن ولسوء الحظ، البرنامج لم يلق النجاح المطلوب فتوقف عرضه. وكان مضطرا إلى القبول بتمثيل الأدوار الثانوية لفترة معينة. في عام 1996، قام بإخراج أول عمل إخراجي مهم له وهو فيلم (The Cable Guy). في عام 1998، شارك في فيلم (هناك شيء ما عن ماري) وهو الفيلم الذي حقق له الشهرة. في عام 2000، ظهر كبطل في بعض الأفلام التي لاقت نجاحا مثل فيلم (Keeping the Faith) وفيلم (Meet the Parents). وشارك أيضا في العديد من أفلام منها فيلم (الرعد الاستوائي)، وفيلم (ليلة في المتحف)، وفيلم (مدغشقر)، وفيلم (حياة والتر ميتي السرية). وحاز جائزة إيمي.
